What you should do before getting into BIM.

Before you study BIM you should study a bit of parametric modelling, and architectural design and construction. Having a modicum of understanding of logic and database management is also helpful. It’ll also help if you’re familiar with typical architectural (I’m including structural, civil, & MEP here) document conventions and practices. That in mind, forget how you do it in CAD, you’re learning a new tool. You didn’t bring your protractor and T-square along to your CAD workstation, don’t assume that a familiar CAD workflow is practical. A crash course in something like Inventor (even Autodesk’s self-guided tutorials if they haven’t nerfed them) that teaches you to think about simple constraints, how they interact, and what you can do with them will make it much easier to think about how those constraints get much more complex when driving multiple assemblies. The BIM Manager's Handbook: Guidance for Professionals in Architecture, Engineering and Construction So I'm not usually a fan of reading books, but these days I've been going all out. I've been reading "The BIM Manager's Handbook: Guidance for Professionals in Architecture, Engineering and Construction, by Dominic Holzer" I must say its a hell of a read and really defines the rules of BIM and how BIM has been implemented in the AEC industry. I would definitely recommend this if you want to get a good understanding in BIM, whether you want to become a BIM Manager or just an employee in the AEC and want to gain understanding. Developers, Contractors and Operators need to talk!

So working with Developers, contractors and operators on several projects. There always seems to be an issue somewhere down the line. How it usually goes down is a little bit like this; 1- The developer sets out requirements, whether that is O+M or design specification, at which point will usually be wrong. 2- The contractor usually will follow what is set out in their scope, do what is asked in contractual documents. 3- The operator often gets left over with missing/or irrelevant operations and maintenance information or simply put it can't find the information that is required at the time of operation and maintence. It is thought that Integrating the approach and getting all the parties involved in the process earlier, will give all parties what they want. Would BIM help them achieve this integrated apporach ? What is 4D BIM?

They always ask. What is construction sequencing? what is 4D? Here is your answer. 4D BIM adds an extra dimension of information to a project information model in the form of scheduling data. This data is added to components which will build in detail as the project progresses. This information can be used to obtain accurate programme information and visualisations showing how your project will develop sequentially.   Time-related information for a particular element might include information on lead time, how long it takes to install/construct, the time needed to become operational/harden/cure, the sequence in which components should be installed, and dependencies on other areas of the project.

Efficiently communicating to clients during design and construction phases

Good Evening ,  I receive many questions on managing client expectations and effectively communicating to clients BIM status. Communicating to client / stakeholders where they stand on BIM can sometimes be an issue, if the client is not well BIM educated. What exactly do you communicate with the client? Is it how many attributes are in the model? LOD? Is the design team meeting the requirements set in the EIR or bim execution plan? Or that doesn't really matter, all procedures appear to be nonsense to stakeholders and they only want to see one result...and that is, is the design coordinated or not.  Now to get to this stage, one must come up with a clever solution to provide feedback on the design and models through a clever system, that's goes through a series of checks. Not just geometry but level of information existing in the model as well.  Simply a traffic light system attached with scores, if you apply the system to incoming design mode...
